On our recent trip to Nelson Bay, we discovered that there is a lot more to do than we could possibly fit into 24 hours, so here is our list of the 12 reasons we need to go back, and why you should holiday there too!
- Dolphin and Whale Watching Tours:
- Nelson Bay is renowned for its incredible marine life, including playful dolphins and majestic whales. Take a boat tour to witness these magnificent creatures up close. The best time for whale watching is from May to November when humpback whales migrate along the coast.
- Tomaree National Park:
- Lace up your hiking boots and explore the stunning Tomaree Head Summit Walk. The panoramic views from the summit are breathtaking, offering a 360-degree vista of the coastline and surrounding islands. I was so sad that we couldn’t fit this into our trip!
- Beaches:
- Nelson Bay boasts pristine, sandy beaches that are perfect for sunbathing and swimming. These include Dutchies Beach, Shoal Bay Beach, and Zenith Beach. All are perfect for relaxing, swimming, or perhaps even having a picnic with the family.
- Water Sports:
- If you’re an adventure junkie, you’ll love the water sports options in Nelson Bay. Try your hand at jet-skiing, parasailing, kayaking, or stand-up paddleboarding. You can rent equipment from various providers around the bay.
- Gan Gan Lookout:
- For another stunning viewpoint, head to Gan Gan Lookout. It offers breathtaking views of Port Stephens, the bay, and beyond. Even better at sunrise and sunset.
- Camel Riding on the Beach:
- Experience something truly unique by taking a camel ride along the beach.
- Snorkeling and Diving:
- Discover the vibrant underwater world of Port Stephens by snorkelling or diving. Broughton Island is a popular spot for divers with its diverse marine life and numerous dive sites.
- Quad Biking and Sand Dune Adventures:
- Test yourself on the immense sand dunes near Nelson Bay with a quad biking adventure.
- Visit the Stockton Sand Dunes:
- The Stockton Sand Dunes are a must-see attraction. These enormous dunes offer a surreal landscape for exploration and photography. You can also try sandboarding for added fun.
- Nelson Bay Marina and Dining:
- Stroll along the picturesque marina and enjoy the numerous dining options. You can savour fresh seafood while gazing at the sunset over the bay. On our trip, we really enjoyed our dinner at The Wharf Bar and Grill.
- Explore Nelson Bay CBD:
- The town’s central business district is filled with boutique shops, galleries, and cafes. It’s a great place to pick up souvenirs or indulge in some retail therapy.
- Festivals and Events:
- Check the local calendar for events and festivals happening during your visit. Nelson Bay hosts various cultural and food festivals throughout the year.

For our recent stay at Nelson Bay, we chose Oaks Lure Nelson Bay. This stunning waterfront resort is nestled in a picturesque coastal location, making it an exceptional holiday destination, with its perfect blend of modern comfort and natural beauty.
We checked into an absolutely beautiful two-bedroom apartment, which featured, a living space, kitchen, dining area, two bathrooms and a huge balcony. The room was double storey which really added to its luxe coastal feel.
The resort’s facilities are stunning, and visitors can take advantage of the inviting outdoor swimming pool and BBQ area.
