Exploring Vail and Breckenridge: A Snowy Adventure in the Rockies

Welcome back to This Sweet Life! Join me as I recount our recent snowy escapade to the picturesque towns of Vail and Breckenridge, in Colorado, USA. From the moment we boarded our United Airlines flight from Brisbane to LAX, excitement filled the air, knowing that a winter wonderland awaited us in Colorado.

The journey was made all the more delightful with business class comforts, courtesy of United Airlines. As we waited for our connecting flight in the Delta Lounge at LAX, we savoured the anticipation of the adventures to come.

Upon landing at Eagle County Regional Airport, we picked up our spacious SUV rental from Avis, ready to embark on our mountain getaway. The scenic drive to Vail was a sight to behold, with snow-capped peaks greeting us at every turn.

Vail, holds a captivating history that intertwines with its stunning alpine landscape. Established in the 1960s by Pete Seibert and Earl Eaton, Vail transformed from a remote mountain valley into a world-renowned ski destination. With its European-inspired village layout and expansive ski terrain, Vail quickly gained popularity among winter sports enthusiasts. Over the years, Vail has evolved into a vibrant year-round destination, offering outdoor adventures, cultural experiences, and luxurious amenities. Despite its growth, Vail has maintained its original charm, preserving its alpine heritage while embracing innovation. Whether exploring the slopes or strolling through the cobblestone streets of Vail Village, visitors can sense the legacy of this mountain paradise, making it a timeless destination for adventurers and relaxation-seekers alike.

Our home-away-from-home in Vail was the cosy Vail Mountain Haus, where we settled into a charming two-bedroom apartment, perfect for our travelling trio. Situated within walking distance to the snow, the convenience of the hotel’s location made it easy for us to hit the slopes bright and early each morning.

Speaking of slopes, Vail Ski Resort offered an unparalleled skiing experience, with pristine trails and breathtaking vistas at every elevation. Whether carving through fresh powder or leisurely exploring the mountain, each run was a thrilling adventure. As an avid snowboarder, my experience at Vail Ski Resort was nothing short of exhilarating. One of the highlights of my visit was exploring the legendary Back Bowls, a vast expanse of backcountry terrain that offered endless opportunities for adventure. From steep chutes to wide-open glades, the Back Bowls are just so much fun. However, what truly stole my heart were the enchanting blue runs that winded through the picturesque landscape. With sweeping views of snow-covered peaks and majestic pine forests, each run felt like a journey through a winter wonderland. The on-piste dining options were equally impressive, with cosy lodges serving up hearty meals and hot beverages to fuel my snowboarding escapades. Whether carving through freshly groomed trails or weaving between the beautiful trees, every moment spent on the slopes of Vail was filled with pure joy and excitement. I can’t wait to return to this snowboarding paradise and create even more unforgettable memories on its legendary runs, perhaps with my children next time.

After exhilarating days on the slopes, we indulged in culinary delights at some of Vail’s finest establishments. A highlight was dinner at Alpen Rose, where we savoured their unique gondola experience and indulged in decadent fondue. For breakfast, Gorsuch stole our hearts with its cosy ambience and delicious fare. The food and drinks at Los Amigos are also fantastic and its right on the snow too!

But our adventure didn’t end in Vail; we journeyed onward to the charming town of Breckenridge for the next leg of our journey. Our accommodation at Mountain Thunder Lodge provided the perfect base for exploring this quaint mountain town.

Nestled within the heart of the Colorado Rockies, Breckenridge boasts a rich history dating back to the mid-19th century. Originally a mining town founded during the Colorado Gold Rush, Breckenridge quickly flourished as prospectors flocked to the area in search of fortune. Throughout the years, the town weathered economic fluctuations and changing industries, but its resilient spirit endured. Today, Breckenridge seamlessly blends its storied past with modern-day charm, offering visitors a glimpse into its fascinating history through well-preserved Victorian architecture, historic sites, and engaging museums. As we wandered the streets of Breckenridge, we couldn’t help but feel the echoes of the past, adding depth and character to this beloved snowy mountain destination.

In Breckenridge, we discovered the beautiful store of the Hat Bar at the Lace and Lariat, where I had a custom hat made for me. Dining experiences at Breckenridge Ale House and Horseshoe Breck left us craving more, each meal a delight to remember. the giant pizza slices at Ale House were just incredible.

Of course, no visit to Breckenridge would be complete without hitting the slopes at Breckenridge Ski Resort. With its vast terrain and world-class amenities, it’s no wonder this resort is a favourite among winter sports enthusiasts. It is also the highest ski resort (in terms of highest lift,) in North America and the third highest in the world. Snowboarding at Breckenridge Ski Resort was an unforgettable experience that left me in awe of its diverse terrain and breathtaking scenery. While Vail boasts its Back Bowls, Breckenridge offers its own unique charm with a variety of terrain parks, groomed trails, and exhilarating backcountry options. Exploring the backcountry bowls of Breckenridge provided me with an adrenaline rush unlike any other, as I carved through untouched powder and navigated the challenging terrain with a sense of freedom and exhilaration. However, it was the beautifully groomed blue runs that stole my heart, offering the perfect blend of speed, challenge, and stunning views of the surrounding peaks. As I weaved through the majestic trees that lined the slopes, I couldn’t help but feel a deep connection to the natural beauty of the Rocky Mountains.

As our trip came to a close, we couldn’t help but reflect on the memories made and the adventures shared in these snow-covered paradises. From exhilarating ski runs to cosy evenings by the fire, our journey through Vail and Breckenridge was nothing short of magical.

Until next time, may your travels be filled with wonder and your heart with joy. Thanks for joining me on this snowy adventure!

Lots of love!
