Sun, Sand, and Smiles: A Perfect Family Getaway to Yamba

Nestled along the picturesque coastline of New South Wales, Yamba emerges as a hidden gem for families seeking a sun-soaked retreat. This charming seaside town, known for its pristine beaches, vibrant community, and a plethora of family-friendly activities, offers the ideal backdrop for creating lasting memories. Join us as we recount our family holiday to Yamba and unveil a curated list of things to do that cater for the whole family.

Beach Bliss at Main Beach
Yamba’s Main Beach serves as the quintessential starting point for any family vacation. With its golden sands and gentle waves, it provides a safe and welcoming environment for kids to build sandcastles, paddle in the shallows, or simply bask in the Australian sun. It is at this beach that my husband taught our two eldest children to bodyboard three years ago, and this year he taught our eldest to surf. Whilst you’re there grab a coffee or breakfast from The Kiosk Yamba.

Surfing Lessons for the Adventurous
For families with older kids or teenagers seeking an adrenaline rush, Yamba’s surf schools offer the perfect opportunity to catch some waves. Whether you’re a novice or an experienced surfer, the local instructors ensure a fun and safe introduction to the thrilling world of surfing.

Explore Yamba’s Iconic Lighthouse
Take a leisurely stroll or a family bike ride to Yamba’s iconic lighthouse situated at the tip of Pilot Hill. The panoramic views of the coastline from the lighthouse are breathtaking, making it an ideal spot for a family photo or a relaxing picnic. It is the perfect spot to take in the sunset with some fish and chips from Yamba Fishos, but don’t forget your mozzie repellant.

Family-Friendly Dining at Yamba’s Cafés
Explore Yamba’s vibrant dining scene, where family-friendly cafes abound. From casual beachfront eateries to charming bakeries serving delectable treats, there’s something to suit every palate. Some of our favourites include pizza and pasta from Sassafras, lunch at the Pacific Hotel, The Kiosk Yamba, and The Mexican.

Kayaking on the Clarence River
For a day of adventure on the water, consider a family kayaking excursion along the scenic Clarence River. Paddle at your own pace, explore hidden coves, and embrace the serenity of nature while bonding with your loved ones.

Angourie Blue and Green Pools
A short drive from Yamba, the Angourie Blue and Green Pools are natural rock pools set against the backdrop of the ocean. Ideal for a refreshing swim or a relaxing sunbathing session, these pools offer a unique aquatic experience. Jumping off of the rocks at the Blue Pool is one of our absolute favourite things to do in the area.

Yamba Historical Walk
Explore Yamba’s rich history with a self-guided historical walk. Stroll through the town centre to discover heritage-listed buildings, and charming boutiques, and learn about Yamba’s evolution from a fishing village to a sought-after coastal destination.

Yuraygir National Park Hike
For nature enthusiasts, the Yuraygir National Park offers a network of scenic walking trails. Immerse yourself in the lush coastal landscapes, observe native wildlife, and breathe in the crisp, salty air as you explore this natural wonder.

Dolphin and Whale Watching
Embark on a thrilling ocean adventure by joining a dolphin or whale-watching tour. Yamba’s waters are home to an abundance of marine life, providing a chance to witness playful dolphins or majestic whales during their migration seasons. If you are lucky you might spot dolphins and whales without the need for a tour. We were lucky enough to see some at Angourie Beach and Pippi Beach.

Adventure to Angourie Beach
Angourie, renowned for its consistent surf breaks, beckons both experienced wave riders and those eager to learn, and offers an aquatic playground for surf enthusiasts. Angourie Beach isn’t just a destination; it’s a haven where the splendour of nature meets the joy of coastal recreation, creating a day to remember in the embrace of seaside tranquillity. If you need a little food or a smoothie to take to the beach with you, or a cafe stop on the way through try Angourie Cafe and Wine Bar.

Yamba Ocean Pool
Yamba Ocean Pool isn’t just a swimming spot; it’s a sanctuary where the beauty of the ocean meets the joy of a refreshing dip, leaving an indelible memory of coastal bliss. Located at the end of Yamba Main Beach, it is a must to visit.

Swim at Pippi Beach
Pippi Beach, with its endless stretch of golden sand and rolling waves, unfolds as a coastal paradise along the shores of Yamba. Named after the iconic Pippi mollusk found in abundance, this beach is a haven for beachgoers seeking a perfect blend of relaxation and recreation. Half of the beach is dog-friendly, with an off-leash area, making it the perfect place to take your four-legged friend.
